The street Carnot
The street Carnot is broadest of the parallel arteries which cross the city of is in west. It assembles towards the place Victor Hugo called formerly the Old Market. In its low part opened one of the gates of the enclosure of XIIe century towards which convergaient the streets which bear today the street Faidherbe and street name of the Crossbow. The inhabitants of the suburbs which came to sell their products in the city borrowed this way which was indicated under the name of Grosse Street because of its dimensions and its intense activity. It is in 1889 that the Town council gave him the name of Carnot in homage to Lazare Hippolyte Carnot, politician (1801-1888) who was a Minister for the State education in 1848. Born in the residence from the Dupont family with the angle of the street Omer / Pley (n°10), he was the second wire of Lazare Nicolas Carnot (Large Carnot) and of Marie Jaqueline Dupont. He was the father of Sadi Carnot, fourth president of IIIè République. With the angle of the street Carnot and street of Valbelle, a vast fountain was built in 1732. It comprised six bronze taps in the shape of head of griffon. On left, n°40-42, this private mansion was acquired in 1858 per Romain de Givenchy who made of it gift with the Small Sisters of the Poor for the establishment of an old people's home. It is today the seat of an Institute of training in care male nurses. In September 1853, Napoleon III and the impératrice Eugenie were accepted there. The n°55, 57 and 61 form a beautiful example of these large residences of traditional style which renewed the aspect of the urban architecture since XVIIIe century. N°52, of 1914 to 1916, the offices of the British State-Major settled there. It is in this house that on November 14, 1914 died, 82 years old, Lord Roberts come to France to visit the Indian troops committed on the face of Flanders. With the n°68, frontage with pilasters with composite capitals and decoration of garlands. The pilasters of the attic are crowned ionic capitals. N°86, the central span include/understand a window decorated with falls of foliage and a console of balcony decorated with garlands. N°91-93, this private mansion of XVIIIe century became a relay of the Post office to the horses then a hotel of travellers. In 1914, it was yielded to the bank of the Credit of North. The Queen of England, Caroline, wife of George IV, placed there in 1820. The duke of Orleans and his brothers remained several times there. N°35 and 37, these buildings present a particular success of the classical architecture. The n°35 was built by the Magistrate in 1749-1750 to place the military head of the Place there. The street was then called street of the Commander. N°15, a small low-relief carries the inscription: " With the old friends " 1717. N°14, Hotel built in 1776-1777 for Marie-Josèphe Sandelin, countess of Fruges, current museum of the Art schools.
