The
street of Dunkirk The street of Dunkirk was, from time immemorial, the principal commercial artery of the city. It was called formerly street of the Carmelite friars in his high part, street of the Capuchins in his low part. It leads to the place of Small-Holland where was the port of the city, which knew, of XIIIe in XIXe century a considerable traffic of various food products, ones artisanal, with especially wool cloths which were exported in all Europe, the other food ones like cereals, but also the wines and salt, as testify some the names to place of Vainquai and of quay of the Saltworks, the water way was thus vital for the city. |

The
port finished, with the ramparts, by the gate of the High-Bridge, at the
same time terrestrial and river. With its node, was Mathurin, Jacquemart
which regularly struck the hours a bell, higher in the street, remain
of interesting architectural elements: the dwellings n°72 and 125
with gracious balconies Louis XV, the ensign of the n°127, "
Boat of Holland " pointing out the harbour activity of the city.
The house n°136, date of 1614, it is registered with the inventory
of the Historic buildings, its frontage with steps, is decorated Saint-Jacob
shells, is of Flemish style. Lastly, the Saleroom in N°165 is an imposing
private mansion of 1777, with wrought iron balconies, of which two are
decorated will mascarons and of carved elements. |
