Jean the Logger
It is a giant carried, created by the Carnavalesque Company of the Friends of Fromulus which had the role to revive the local trade and to distract the population. Left for the first time on March 22, 1914, Jean the Logger represents a strong solid, of a gigantic size and a force herculéenne, which was illustrated by saving Steenvoorde of the invasion Norman.
Undeniable hero of the city, he became the ambassador impossible to circumvent of Steenvoorde and represents it in the area, in France and abroad as it was the case in India in 1989.
Rosalie
The history of this giant goes up at the beginning of this century. At the time dairy of the Hamlet of Ryveld, close to Steenvoorde, was going from house in house to carry its milk. In remembering, a first giantess was built. Unfortunately, it burned as of its first output. In 1993, Association the Friends of Ryveld decided his rebuilding and 13 the Mars 1994, it was officially baptized. Rosalie is a giant carried a 3,85 m height and a weight of approximately 80 kg.
The Beautiful Helene
Born in 1853 during the festivals of the mid-Lent, the Beautiful Helene would have been one of the most former giants of the Flanders. Gone up on a low and capped carriage of a straw hat, it had become a local figure on the markets where it sold flowers. Unfortunately, time made fall in disuse and it was necessary to wait until 1980 to see the Friends of Gambrinus making it live again. The Beautiful Helene then becomes a giant carried a height of 3,80m and a weight of approximately 65 kg. Restored for its 140 years in 1993, it becomes the godmother of Rosalie and continuous to take part in many processions.
A folklore always present
The giants constitute one of the principal elements of the folklore in Flanders. Many demonstrations are done in their presence. Gargantua with Bailleul, Jerome the miller with Boeschèpe, Reuze dad and Reuze mom in Cassel, the family Tisje Tasje in Hazebrouck, Jacques and Isabelle of the Ditch with New Church (Heuvelland), Cyrus with Poperinge, Jean the logger with Steenvoorde, Totor with Steenwerck, Cieper the cat and its family with Ypres.
Some come out only in their city, others take part in external demonstrations. Thus Jean the logger went to India and Spain, Jerome to Great Britain and Switzerland and Totor, to Spain, to Germany and Switzerland. They become then of true ambassadors of the Flanders.
